Hoya biruensis (formerly H. aff 'Spartioides')

A species in great danger of extinction in the wild, Hoya biruensis is unique and quirky, not only for its grass-like leaves and brushy appearance, but because it's one of the few known night-blooming Hoyas.  This species was only officially described for science in 2025 by researchers Rodda and Rehayu, and is native to an extremely limited part of a single island of Indonesia.  In the wild, palm oil plantations threaten its survival, as they do for many rare endemic plants in the tropics worldwide.  Despite its rarity, this species is extremely easy to grow and flowers freely in cultivation.  Formerly known as H. aff 'Spartioides' for its similarity to the very closely related H. spartioides, it differs from its cousin in one unique way:  H. spartioides produces blossoms that open at night and wither and die the following day; the flowers of H. biruensis, however, bloom after dark, close by morning, then re-open on the second night, withering and dropping after closing again at daybreak.  It will be fascination to many of us Hoya-nerds to learn how these unique characteristics suit each plant for its particular means of pollination in the wild!
