Hailing from the wilds of Usambara Province in Tanzania, the African Violet is a long-beloved, familiar houseplant with a fascinating backstory!  First described in the late nineteenth century by German colonists in Tanzania, the species reminded them of wild violets back in Europe, and the plants soon became popular as conservatory and terrarium specimens during the late Victorian era.  Once considered "fussy" and challenging to grow, newer hybrids have become hardier and much easier for the home gardener.  Plants flower cyclicly year-round with simple care and good lighting.
