Madagascar, that unique island nation off the east coast of the African continent, is famed for being home to many species of plants and animals found nowhere else on earth. Six total species of the genus Xerosicsyos call the island home, and by far the most interesting is the String of Coins plant.

With thick, round leathery leaves that store water and stiff climbing or trailing stems, String of Coins is a plant of the jungle understory, where it climbs tree trunks, scrambles over rocks, and grows quite large, with older specimens sometimes having leaves bigger than silver dollars.

Specialty Tropicals has grown this species for a couple of years, and we're very much impressed with its ease of care, reasonably fast growth, and tolerance of some occasional neglect. Like most succulents, String of Coins would prefer to be a bit on the dry side, rather than ever having its soil soaked, but it does enjoy a good watering once or twice a week. We recommend using a porous potting medium like our ST Succulent Mix, that allows most of the water to drain through, retaining enough for the plant to use while still maintaining air space around the roots.

We offer well-established plants in 6 inch hanging baskets, with multiple stems and lots of coin-shaped leaves.
