What's Hot in the Pot: This Season's Most-Wanted Plants

Even a hobby as bucolic as gardening isn't immune to trends of fashion, and the nursery industry is responsive to what customers want most. Here are a few of the most popular "it" plants right now, for your consideration:

Monstera borsigiana
albo-variegata
If any plant can lay claim to being the "media darling" of 2023, it's the Monstera albo. With its brilliantly contrasting white-on-dark green foliage, this variety is in such demand that prices have soared. Many serious Aroid collectors wouldn't bat an eye at paying upward of $700-$1,000 for a really nice mature specimen with high white variegation. Careful, though: there are Albos, and then there are Albos! The degree of white
influences price most, followed by the size of the specimen. These are often offered via internet auctions, where buyers bid on individual, numbered specimens with prices varying wildly based on those features. We agree that it's a stunning plant, but we also know that many customers aren't ready to sink that kind of cash into even a gorgeous plant, so we offer many other beautiful (and less-pricey) options that can give your collection a punch of pizzazz without consuming your grocery budget for the next two months!

Philodendron
'White Knight'
Continuing the white-on-green theme, this beautiful Philo offers a wonderful contrast of colors with all the variability of Monstera 'albo', but at a fraction of the price. Right now, we have enormous specimens in 4"-6" pots for just $39.99 while supplies last. Our plants are large and vigorous, grown out for over a year, and ready to make a splash in your home or plant collection. Plus, this variety is easy-going and thrives in any ordinary home environment with minimal care!

Satin Pothos Scindapsus pictus
Pothos vines of various types have long been favorites as houseplants. Satin Pothos made its entry into the market recently and has been in high demand ever since. Fast and easy to grow and bringing a wealth of color and texture, it's a great choice for any collection.

Philodendron 'Red Sun'
Among the many new offerings in sessile (ground-hugging, as opposed to climbing, also called "self-heading") Philodendrons is this brilliantly colored variety with long, lance-shaped leaves that come in a multitude of shades, most notably a brilliant, dayglow orange! Like most Philos, it's an easy grower, and a bright spot on a porch or windowsill will yield an abundance of color! Because this class of Philodendron doesn't climb, it's easier to maintain and doesn't present the problem of becoming leggy with age.

Hoya carnosa 'Tricolor'
We love Hoyas, and these easygoing vines come in such an astounding variety of shapes, colors and textures that you'll never run out of new ones to collect! Sometimes called "Wax Vines", Hoyas are popular both for their thick, durable foliage and for their flowers which come in large clusters (umbels) and last a long time, some varieties with exquisite perfume to enhance your home!

Begonias
If you love variety, Begonias are for you! With a full palette of colors, textures, sizes and forms, these versatile and amazing plants offer foliage, blossoms, and a wide range of shapes from flat, ground-hugging ones to tall cane types. When it comes to foliage, most folks think Rex-type Begonias are the champs, while Angelwing, pendulous, tuberous- and fibrous-rooted types all come with their own unique features and charm.

Orchids
Until recent decades, orchids were often considered the territory of only dedicated collectors, often wealthy people with custom-built solariums and a staff of gardeners to care for them. How the times have changed! Dozens of groups of Orchids make amazing easy to care for houseplants, growing happily on a bright windowsill with just a humidity tray and a little water. We offer Orchids for every taste and every skill

Air Plants
For the ultimate in carefree gardening, how about plants that need neither soil nor pots? Air Plants include Bromeliads, Ferns, Orchids, and others that naturally grow as epiphytes (attached to the trunks of trees, rocks, etc.) Mounted on slabs of sustainably harvested natural cork bark or other substrates, these plants easily thrive on just an occasional spritz of water. Whether you want flowers, foliage, or both, we have a mounted Air Plant to suit you!

Bromeliads
Distinguished by the central "vase" or "cup" formed by their leaves, which traps and holds rainwater, Bromeliads are popular for their thick, durable foliage, brilliant patterns and colorful flower bracts that last for months at a time. Well-grown Bromeliads may stay in constant bloom for years at a time, and their requirements are simple: just moderate watering and a bright spot out of direct sun. Many can even grow on cork mounts, and their brilliant colors liven the home, even in the short days of winter!

Monstera 'Thai Constellation'
Like the 'albo', this Monstera delivers the cool contrast of dappled white on deep, mint-green leaves that look as if they've been splatted with a paint brush! Though still relatively new in the nursery trade and thus not inexpensive, 'ThaiCon' comes in at a fraction of the cost of other collector-grade Monsteras and Philodendrons!
